Genuine amber resin (succinite) is fossilized tree sap. At room temperature, it is a hard but reasonably brittle resin with a mild fragrance or no noticeable fragrance at all. When heated, it produces a very strong, lasting, earthy fragrance with pine and wood undertones. This fragrance is one of the ways to test for fake amber.
Most amber incense resin on the market today (amber dhoop) is not a single-ingredient natural resin; it is a mixture of tree gums, beeswax, powders, perfumes, and oils. These products will generally look like cut squares of dough; genuine amber resin looks like broken chunks of resin or rocks.
The Benefits of Amber Resin Incense
When burned as incense, natural amber resin releases a terpene called pinene, which was found to help lower heart rate and reduce stress hormones like cortisol in clinical studies.
Amber resin starts releasing a strong, long-lasting fragrance at a low heat. Which makes it very efficient and easy to burn as incense. A little amber resin will produce a lot of fragrance.
How to use Amber Incense:
Because of its relaxing and grounding effects, amber resin is burned before and during yoga, meditation, and when someone is looking to simply unwind or prepare for sleep.
Its strong, soothing fragrance makes it a popular choice for home ambience, clearing spaces before rituals, and blending with other incense resins.
How to Burn Amber Resin Incense
Electric or tea light candle burners are the most versatile and efficient way to burn amber resin, but the traditional method of using charcoal is effective.
Charcoal Burners: Fill a nonflammable, heat-resistant bowl or burner with sand and place a charcoal disc in the center. Light the disk and wait for a layer of ash to form over the top, then place a small piece of amber on top of the glowing disc.
Electric Resin Incense Burner: Warm up the burner. For burners with heat control, set it in the middle. Place a small piece of tinfoil on the burner, then place a small chunk of amber on the foil. Wait for the amber to start to melt and release its fragrance, and adjust the heat setting to your preference.
Tea Light Candle Burner: Move the plate to the highest point above the candle. Place a small piece of tinfoil on the plate, then light the candle. Give it a few minutes to warm up the plate and add a small piece of amber. Observe how the amber is burning and adjust the distance from the tea candle to your preference.
When the resin turns dark brown and hardens, remove it and add a new piece of amber
Safety Precautions:
Only burn in a well-ventilated area.
Never leave burning incense unattended.
Keep active resin burners out of reach of children and pets.
Make sure resin burners are no longer producing heat when done.
