Chinese mugwort (Artemisia argyi) is an aromatic perennial plant native to Asia. It’s famous in traditional Chinese medicine—especially for moxibustion—and used in dishes like Qingtuan (green, sticky rice dumplings eaten during China’s Qingming Festival).

Smoking Mugwort
Chinese mugwort produces a strong, smooth, aromatic smoke and can add some needed flavor to herbal smoking blends. Significantly more aromatic than Artemisia vulgaris, its profile is closer to wormwood. Best for pipes and vaping, even in its whole leaf form, it is not great for rolling. Strangely, in China, mugwort is an ingredient in a brand of herbal smokes called Guocao. Artemisia argyi has not been shown to be habit-forming.
Mugwort Tea
Chinese mugwort makes a strong and bitter tea with a distinctive “tea” flavor. We would recommend using a smaller amount of leaf per water ratio. This is a full leaf, which makes an excellent, clean tea.
For the best results, start out with 1 gram per 12 oz of water. Bring the water to a boil, add the mugwort, and cover. Steep the leaves for 5-10 minutes, allow to cool, strain, and serve. If you would like a stronger or weaker tea, you can increase or decrease the amount of Chinese mugwort used and the amount of time it is steeped in small increments.
Alternative method: Add the leaves to the water and bring it to a boil. Boil the leaf in the water for 1-2 minutes. Allow to cool, strain, and serve.
Benefits
Mugwort (Sailor’s Tobacco) was used to flavor beer before hops and may “possibly” act as a bitter digestive tonic, mild stimulant, nervine (calms the nerves), and anti-rheumatic. More scientific study and research is needed. It was also given the name “Dream Herb” because it is said to “possibly” help promote vivid dreaming.
It may also have a history of easing the symptoms of withdrawal in people with addictions.
