Great lettuce (Lactuca virosa) has a fascinating history as a wild herbal remedy.
In both ancient Greece and Rome, great lettuce was used as herbal medicine. The famous Greek physician Dioscorides recommended it for use as a pain reliever and a sleep aid. This was also documented by the Roman author, Pliny the Elder. In medieval Europe, great lettuce was also used as a remedy for insomnia, restlessness, and various pains. During the 18th and 19th centuries in England and America, it was commonly used in herbal medicine as a natural pain reliever and relaxant. Throughout its use in history, this plant has been shown to be non-habit-forming.
More scientific studies and research are needed to verify any claims regarding the effects of wild lettuce.
Botanical name: Lactuca Virosa
Plant family: Papaveraceae
Also called: Bitter Lettuce and Tall Lettuce.
Uses
Great Lettuce Tea
Genuine great lettuce tea is slightly bitter, and some people prefer it slightly sweetened with honey. Lavender flowers may also be added to smooth out the flavor.
Try starting out with 1 gram of great lettuce per 16 oz of water. Boil the leaf in the water for at least 3 minutes, allow it to cool, and strain out the remaining material. If you would like a stronger or weaker tea, you can increase or decrease the amount of leaf used and the amount of time it is boiled in small increments.
Smoking Great Lettuce
Great lettuce, a fairly smooth smoke, is smoked on its own and is a common ingredient in natural smoking blends. It burns well in papers, pipes, and dry herb vaporizers.
Herbal Supplement
Great lettuce is commonly used by natural health practitioners in diffusions or teas, capsules, extracts and tinctures.
