What is Mullein?
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus), also known as common mullein or great mullein, is a biennial herb with fuzzy leaves and tall flower stalks. Native to Europe, northern Africa, and Asia. It was introduced to North America in the 1630s by the Puritans, who brought seeds with them from England for their medicinal gardens. It quickly naturalized from the East Coast westward to California; by 1876, it was thriving in fields and along roadsides.
What are Mullein’s Benefits?
Lung Support
Supports respiratory health as an expectorant, helping loosen mucus and soothe airways. Traditionally used to help treat cough and the symptoms of bronchitis and asthma.
Anti-Inflammatory
Studies suggest verbascoside compounds in mullein aid healthy inflammation response in the respiratory system and body, reducing swelling.
Antioxidant
Mullein contains antioxidants that fight free radicals and support cellular protection, and it’s rich in flavonoids for overall wellness.
Relaxation
For many, mullein may offer mild calming effects. Traditionally, mullein has been used for gently easing tension.
